Looking At The Dangers And Disadvantages Of Quick Weight Loss Programs

by Ben Pate

If you look at many of the diet plans available today, you will see that many of them promise you quick weight loss. However, these can be dangerous and it is important to know what the dangers and drawbacks of losing weight in this way can be. It is also important to learn how to lose weight safely and effectively so that you can preserve your health at the same time you are getting to a body shape and weight that will make you feel healthy and attractive.

Many people underestimate the role of metabolism in dieting. When we eat or drink, we take in calories in the food and beverages we consume. Our metabolism is the process by which our body converts those calories into energy. An efficient metabolism means that we can burn off more calories and will end up with less retained weight than we would if we had a slow or inefficient metabolism.

Although it may seem possible at first glance to simply reduce body weight by cutting back severely on the amount of calories that they consume, the fact is that there are a number of drawbacks to this method. Trying to drop weight by starving your body is actually the worst way you can go about dropping weight in a hurry. Here are some of the main reasons why this is the case.

You may be surprised to learn that by cutting back drastically on the calories that we eat, we will actually end up losing weight more slowly than if we eat sensibly and reduce the amount of calories we eat gradually. By suddenly cutting back on the calories we take in, we make our bodies think that we are starving and it will switch over to survival mode. Holding on to body fat in times of little to no food was one way our bodies survived when we were trying to get our food through hunting and gathering.

We also tend to shed water weight first when we go on a speed diet. This effect is enhanced when we take many of the fat burning pills that are on the market today. As we dry out, we lose pounds and inches but it is not a real result because we are not losing fat. We can become quite weak if we become dehydrated and the situation can become dangerous if it is allowed to go on too long.

Other affects you may experience are a drop in your energy level and health problems due to restricted vitamin and mineral intake. You can lower your energy levels and if you stay on a severe diet for too long, you may end up lowering your metabolic rate permanently and causing significant, long term health problems.

To avoid the dangers of quick weight loss, you should try and lose no more than two pounds a week. This will preserve your metabolism. If you watch portion sizes and eat more fruits and vegetables, your caloric intake will be reduced. By increasing your activity level, you can burn more calories and finally begin shedding pounds and inches in as healthy a way as possible.

As you can see, quick weight loss has more dangers than many diet companies and diet pill manufacturers would want you to believe. By setting realistic time lines we can work towards achieving our fat loss goal without putting our health at risk and reducing the chance that we will simply gain the weight back in the end.
