Treating Carcinophobia With Hypnotism

by Alan Densky

The fear of cancer is among the top ten most widespread phobias, and it's easy to see why. Nobody wishes to develop cancer or see someone they love develop it. Although it is normal to want to avoid getting ill, people with cancer phobia experience an extreme amount of fear that frequently controls their lives. Overcoming the fear of cancer used to take months or even years, but with better knowledge of the condition and improved treatments, this has changed. Proven hypnosis techniques can help sufferers reclaim their health and well-being.

It's not hard to see what might cause carcinophobia. This fear is linked to a fear of illness, death, and loss of control. In many cases, sufferers feel disturbed by a loved one's experience with illness. People who have lost a friend to cancer, or are at risk of developing cancer, live in fear of the day when they are diagnosed with the disease.

The anxiety created by cancer phobia can lead people to make extreme life decisions. Some sufferers constantly visit doctors to make sure they are not ill, while others avoid doctor visits completely, afraid of being diagnosed with an illness. Those with the phobia will worry if they develop the smallest symptoms of poor health, such as a migraine, and wonder if it's cancer. People will often do whatever it takes to avoid getting ill.

People suffering from carcinophobia often feel like they have a lot to fear. It's a persistent feeling that can affect both men and women. An individual might worry, "Who will provide for the family if I get cancer?" or agonize over other important concerns. The phobia can take a huge toll on sufferers and their families.

Many people can manage their fears by simply avoiding the cause of their fear. Arachnophobes can often cope by keeping clear of spiders, and claustrophobic people are careful to avoid tight, confined spaces such as crowded rooms. Carcinophobia, however, is different. The phobia is primarily triggered by a person's innermost thoughts and concerns. It can be unbearable for an individual to suffer from a fear they simply can't avoid. This leaves most people with the phobia in a chronic state of worry.

There are many phobia treatments available. Common ones involve therapy and anti-anxiety medication. Traditional counseling can produce lasting results, but it often takes a long time, up to several months for some people. Prescription drugs work to lessen a person's anxiety, but it fails to eliminate the root causes of a deep-rooted fear. Hypnosis is another option that delivers permanent results in a shorter period of time than other types of treatment. Hypnotherapy is now a leading choice because it's a non-invasive, safe, and effective treatment.

Hypnosis combines anxiety-relief practices with fear treatment to rapidly cure a phobia. A good program will start with stress-relief therapy to help relieve the emotional distress caused by fear. Once a person feels calm and relaxed, hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques work to direct the unconscious mind into adopting a new, phobia-free thought process.

Conventional hypnosis uses direct, post-hypnotic suggestions to cure a phobia. This method is very useful when a person is open to it. Unfortunately, these traditional techniques often prove futile because many people tend to question post-hypnotic suggestions and resist direct commands.

A severe phobia such as cancer phobia calls for a more sophisticated type of treatment such as Ericksonian hypnosis. This type of hypnosis works best for those who are analytical, and who are suffering from chronic anxiety and fear. It uses indirect suggestions embedded in conversations, stories, and metaphors to help them overcome their fears.

The innovative NLP technology does not depend upon suggestion at all, so it can be effective for everyone. In simple terms, NLP offers strategies to train the unconscious mind to use the same thought patterns that are creating a symptom or fear, to eliminate it.

Because both hypnosis and NLP function at the unconscious level, users describe feeling more empowered and secure using these therapies.

With Conventional Hypnotherapy, programs typically need to be specific to each phobia. One advantage of a properly designed Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP program is that both are suitable for use on any phobia, or even several phobias. This is an ideal help to some carcinophobia sufferers who also have other panic disorders, such as general agoraphobia or germophobia.

Carcinophobia is a serious condition, but one that can be treated by suitable hypnosis techniques. NLP techniques have become a popular phobia treatment because of their effectiveness at addressing the underlying cause of all anxiety disorders and not just the signs and symptoms. Sophisticated Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP techniques can help even the most severe phobia sufferers overcome their fears once and for all.
