SAD - When Recurrent Blues Get Out of Control

by Alan B. Densky, CH

Are you becoming concerned that your struggle with seasonal sadness is lasting longer, or is more severe than you have previously experienced? How do you know if this is merely a short-lived problem, or if you may have a serious problem with Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD)? Ought you to look for treatment from a physician? Educate yourself about the signs of SAD, how it affects sufferers, and those treatments that are most helpful.

SAD is more than just getting the blues when the weather is bad. This condition begins when the fall season begins to change to winter and daylight hours are shortened. The majority of people experience symptoms at some point between September and November. Furthermore, since SAD and other types of depression are so severe, doctors require extensive evidence of the condition before they are willing to make a definite diagnosis. Despite the fact that signs can be quite severe, doctors almost never diagnose a patient with SAD until after he or she shows strong evidence of the disorder for at least three consecutive winters.

Individuals who are affected by SAD start to experience emotions of sadness, reduced motivation, and often sleep for excessive periods. Furthermore, they develop a craving for carbohydrates or sweets. In addition, most people diagnosed with SAD also have immune systems that do not function adequately. Often, they develop illnesses much more easily than people who do not have SAD.

This condition can negatively affect a person's capability of functioning at work or educationally. This lack of motivation often makes getting out of bed or engaging in one's usual daily activities difficult. Sufferers have trouble participating in social situations, or even at home. These persons often experience episodes of extreme anxiety and irritability. Occasionally, symptoms become severe and distressing enough that people even think about suicide and have to be hospitalized for treatment.

Not surprisingly, females seem to have a higher rate of SAD than men do. Furthermore, this disorder seems to get better each year when spring arrives. In fact, by March or April, symptoms usually decrease or disappear altogether - until autumn returns again. This is the case even in regions that tend to be cloudy or rainy throughout the entire year. In fact, almost twenty percent of the people diagnosed with SAD will at some point exhibit signs of bipolar disorder.

These sufferers are usually depressed during wintertime, but report normal moods throughout the rest of the year. In some cases, however, they describe instances of uncontrollable elation, which is also called mania. As with other types of depression, SAD may become quite severe or even result in disability if not treated properly. Moreover, some individuals suffer from very low-grade levels of depression; they may experience sleepiness, decreased vigor, and eating difficulties. Such people, however, rarely suffer instances of depressed moods or anxiety.

This kind of depression is relatively uncommon in sunny areas such as Florida, southern California, and even Colorado. Others, who reside in places with a large number of cloudy days, like Ohio, Illinois, or Oregon are at higher risk for developing this disorder. Citizens of countries such as Finland, Germany, and England also struggle with seasonal depression.

Medical researchers have used many alternative approaches to help affected individuals recover from this exhausting problem. They have tried exposing people to artificial light in an attempt to aid them to produce more serotonin and reduce depression symptoms. Researchers have also worked with medicines such as antidepressants, as well as supplements, like melatonin, in an attempt to relieve these symptoms of depression. Often, those who develop SAD also seek out psychotherapists when they are suffering most greatly.

Each of these therapies have been used with variable amounts of effectiveness. Despite this, all are definitely more costly and require more time than two recently introduced, innovative techniques. Hypnotherapy practitioners have perfected the art of teaching both NLP and self-hypnosis strategies for depression. Using the latter method, individuals learn to talk themselves out of a depressive period and resolve their symptoms. These innovative treatments, hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, have proven to have an astonishing amount of benefit in assisting people to recover from, and avoid future occurrences of SAD.

Summary: Seasonal Affective Disorder is a kind of winter blues that returns every year at the same season. Only persons who struggle with this illness are able to determine whether they will continue to fight these symptoms on their own, over and over, or to try to get assistance in resolving this problem forever. Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming to treat SAD are both effective, innovative treatments that provide a quick escape from these feelings without consuming excessive amounts of money or energy.
